August found the Copper Hills Chapter looking forward to a three day camping trip to central Nevada. Randy & Shirley and Mike & Denice had laid out a wonderful trip to visit Eureka, Nevada and the surrounding area. However, just before the trip was to begin, it was cancelled due to weather concerns. The temperature was forecasted to be in the high 90’s and without electrical hookups the general consensus was it would not be good for our members to be exposed to that kind of heat.

Be that as it may, the following narrative gives an overview of what Randy & Shirley and Mike & Denice had originally planned for the campout.

With a little luck the Eureka campout can be rescheduled for a time when the weather is more cooperative.

Hello and welcome to all: Our trip to Eureka this month promises to be an exploration of one of Nevada’s oldest mining areas. In light of the coronavirus imposition and state mandates, each one of us needs to feel free to participate or not in any of the planned events. After you have reviewed the agenda please let me know if you decide to NOT participate in any of the events.

· Wednesday, August 19: This date applies to Copper Hills attendees and others who wish to join us: Meet at Middlegate at 11:30 for lunch (We have had lunch here in the past and there hamburgers are delicious). From Middlegate, we will proceed to the (Forest Service) Bob Scott Summit camp ground, located out of Austin, over the summit and on the left side of the highway. Dinner will be on your own.

· Thursday, August 20: We all meet up at the Eureka Fairgrounds located approximately one mile east of Eureka. Drive thru the gates and turn left. There is a small grassy area we will park around. Remember this is dry camping. We will have access to an enclosed area called the Exhibit Hall. We will also have access to bathrooms. The daily charge is $125 which will be split evenly among the participants. Let’s try and get together for a meet and greet around 4:00. Bring your favorite beverage and a chair and we’ll look for a shady spot. Dinner on your own. Those who are comfortable in eating together are encouraged to do so.

· Friday, August 21: We’ll get going today around 9:30. Mike, a Eureka resident, will lead us to a couple of ghost towns and an old charcoal hive to explore. Bring a lunch and a chair. I am also working on getting a dinner prepared for us at a local restaurant. Plans are not quite, complete but I will give you an update when they are. Mike has indicated that there is a gun range in the area if anyone is interested. Let me know if there is an interest and Mike will give you the details.

· Saturday, August 22: A flapjack breakfast is planned for 9:00. The flapjacks will be provided and all others are asked to bring a side dish (fruit, meats, etc.). A walking tour of the town is planned. We’ll explore the old Eureka Theater, Courthouse, museum, underground tunnels and others. We may need to break up in smaller groups to do these tours; we’ll decide when we get there. Meet for afternoon beverages at 4:00 and then dinner on your own. Eat together if so desired.

· Sunday, August 23: Clean up, settle bill and enjoy a safe trip back home.

As you can see, the three days would have been exciting and informative. Because of all the time and effort that went into planning this trip, the Chapter would like to thank Randy & Shirley and Mike & Denice for all their hard work.
